Puppets and Pumpkins

Hello world. I hope everyone had an amazing Halloween and received plenty of candy.

I spent my Halloween in Louisville. This trip came about a couple of months ago when I bought tickets to see Dead as a Dodo at the Actors Theater of Louisville. The show is about a little boy skeleton and his friend, a dodo, as they navigate the underworld. (For more information, go here: https://www.wakkawakka.org/dead-as-a-dodo) All the characters and animals were puppets, and the set design was relatively minimal. The ladder relied heavily on lights and relatively basic props. With that said, the show was absolutely amazing. The fact that it relied on such simple sets gives the audience a chance to truly focus on the puppets and on the story itself. It was just so well done, and I could not recommend it more. Word of advice, though: bring tissues. I have been listening to the soundtrack since I bought the tickets, and I knew that there would be one scene that would make me cry. What actually happened: I cried for the last part of the show. The whole show was so touching and worth seeing. If given a chance, I’d see it again (and would actually have those tissues).

I wish I could describe the show, but I think it’s just something that needs to be experienced.

After the show and a late lunch/early dinner at West Sixth, I attended Jack’s Lantern Trail at Iroquois Park. This was a different experience compared to the play. For this, you follow a trail covered in a variety of pumpkins, a number of which are carved with detailed designs. There were also lights and displays intermingled with the pumpkins. The skill to carve some of these pumpkins was insane. I can barely carve a straight line on a pumpkin let alone consider doing what these people did. I know that my photos won’t do them justice, but they were so cool. If you’re ever in Louisville in October, it’s worth seeing. (It also helps that the proceeds go towards the Park Alliance in Louisville.)

Today (Sunday) was a little slower. I did some running around for the house. I also attended a writer’s group at From the Ground Up Bookstore in Shepherdsville. This is a good chance to get back into writing, and I can’t wait to possibly share some work.
