Books and a House

Hello world! It’s been an eventful weekend, even though there wasn’t too much traveling happening.

I closed on my first house on Friday afternoon. This was something that I thought was going to be years down the line, mainly due to constant job hopping and constant moving. It didn’t make sense to buy a house if I wasn’t sure how long I was going to stay in a place. But, I like my current job, and the area I live in is nice. It also helps that there are multiple major cities within no more than six or seven hours driving from the city. Granted, six hours can feel long depending on the route. Anyway, I started taking stuff over today. I can’t wait for the movers to come and move my furniture so I can formally move in. Until then, I am still hanging out in my apartment.

Beyond that, I spent Saturday at the Louisville Book Festival. This was my first time at the event, but it wasn’t my first book festival. I’ve been to the Mississippi Book Festival, the Savannah Book Festival (3 times), the National Book Festival, and the Southern Festival of Books (Nashville, Tn). I also remember attending one in St. Augustine, Fl, when I lived down there, and it seemed like it moved cities every year. I can’t remember the name of it, though. It’s not the Florida Book Festival. I looked it up, and a festival with that name doesn’t appear to exit. It also wasn’t the St. Augustine Book Festival because it was held at Flagler College, not at the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum.

This one seemed different from the others because there were more panels and sessions on specific topics (ex. how to make a dull topic funny and magic realism). There weren’t any sessions that seemed to be about a single book. With few exceptions, they all seemed to be themed sessions.

I liked this format because it gave me the chance to learn about different things and hear about different topics. But, also, I like to listen to authors talk about a specific, outside of a panel format. I also like planning ahead and reading one of the books being discussed. It’s just fun seeing the author talk about something I’ve read. In the end, though, I think it was worth attending. It was interesting to listen to the different speakers and to see how they approached writing and various topics. I will definitely be attending next year. I want to see who will be attending and what the topics will be. It’s also nice going up to Louisville for the day.

Next week, I plan on going back up to Louisville to see Dead as a Dodo at the Actor’s Theater. I’m so excited. I’ve been listening to the soundtrack for months in anticipation of the show. Of course, I will keep everyone posted on the show.
