A Kentucky Cryptid
So, the weekend is coming to an end, which means that it is time to let everyone know what I did over the past couple of days.
The weekend started with a showing of the Ring at the State Theater. I know that I uploaded a photo to let everyone know how I spent my Friday, but it’s still worth mentioning since it is spooky season and all.
Saturday was spent in Louisville at the Goatman Festival. This was the festival’s fourth year and included speakers who discussed various cryptids as well as tours, music, vendors, and food. I arrived early, partially because I wasn’t sure about the parking situation and partially because I got confused on what time the event started. That was an error on my part, not the festivals. It was a nice day, though. So, I couldn’t complain.
I spent part of the afternoon walking around the vendor area to see what was available. It took everything I had not to get one of everything, but I was able to show some restraint. I did pick up a Goatman print (from Holly Wholahan Art) and a Mothman bookmark (from As You Wish Custom), though. Do I really need more prints or bookmarks? No, but I don’t have a Goatman print and a Mothman bookmark. Honestly, I don’t have a lot of nice bookmarks. Most of the ones that I have are the ones that you get from a bookstore when you buy a book. Those are convenient, though, since I am good at misplacing those.
One of the fun things that was there was the Dr. Jekyll’s Institute of Monster Studies. The popup highlights cryptids from West Virginia and was filled with costumes and explanations of each crytpid. Some of them I knew, like Mothman and the Flatwoods Monster, while others I didn’t, like Abbagoochie. This was something that I hadn’t seen before and would love to do again. I wonder if there are other things like this that show cryptids from other areas. I guess I’ll knew to go to other festivals to find out.
I did see one of the speakers, specifically Mike Smith. His topic was on the Beast of the Land Between the Lakes. While I knew of the Land Between the Lakes, I didn’t know they had their own monster. Do I want to visit now to see if I can find it? Of course. I’ll add it to my list of places to visit and will keep everyone posted if I find the beast.
Finally, when I initially left for the event, I didn’t plan on buying lunch, but there were so many good food trucks there that it was hard not to. (It didn’t help that I didn’t eat a big breakfast before I left.) I ended up getting a burrito from Xtra Terrestrial Tacos. Something I have yet to master at home is a good burrito. I always feel like they should be easy to make, but I’ve learned that that’s not the case. So, when I have the chance to get one, I can’t say no.
I also got a drink (Bobba Fest) from Fabled Brew Works because craft beer.
That was my day at the Festival. I didn’t stay too terribly long since there were errands I wanted to do (chiefly to Peace of Earth Refillery and Surprise Lilly), but I hope to stay longer next year to see more of the speakers and participate in some of the tours.
Today was a little slow. I had planned on attending a writing group in Shepherdsville, but unfortunately, it was cancelled. So, I went to Salt River Brewing since I had driven all the way out there.
That was the end of my weekend. Next weekend is the Louisville Book Festival. I will keep everyone posted about that.
