A Side Quest
I thought about doing a post about books since I had no real travel (large or small) planned, but yesterday (Saturday), I decided to do some exploring so I could get out of the house for a little bit.
So, if it wasn’t planned, what exactly did that look like?
Well, it started with a stop in Glendale, Kentucky. The small town has it share of historic buildings and some cute stores. I like to say that I tried the southern restaurant in downtown, but unfortunately, I ate before I made the drive and just wasn’t hungry when I arrived. That just means that I have to go back sometime soon. Since I wasn’t in town to be a foodie, I decided to do some shopping and looked around Glendale Antique Mall. Like so many antique stores, the building never seemed to end and consisted of an endless number of rooms that didn’t seem to go together. It also had an endless number of items. There was a wooden bed frame that I was tempted to get, but I don’t need it right now. So, I left it for another shopper to find and fall in love with. I did find a book that sounded interesting (and it was only $4). That definitely got rehomed.
From Glendale, I headed on over to the Shepherdsville where my first stop was Main Book Hook, a bookstore. That shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who truly knows me. The store is home to both new and used books. While I didn’t need any more books, I still managed to take home two books - Gone Girl and The World We Make. It’s hard to say no when both books only cost $7.
If visiting a bookstore is expected of me, so is visiting a local brewery. In downtown Shepherdsville, there is the Salt River Brewing Co. The brewery has a good selection of beer brewed by Salt River Brewing and other breweries. I was unfortunately only able to have one, but I’ll definitely be going back. There was also a pizza shop in the brewery. The pizza smelled good, but I still wasn’t hungry from my early lunch. Next time.
I had to make an uneventful trip to get gas, but once the car was filled up, I made my way over to Fort Duffield, just outside of West Point, Kentucky. The site is just off the road and off a set of railroad lines. The Civil War Earthworks sit atop a mountain, looking over the town of West Point and the Salt River. While it is only a quarter mile hike from the parking lot, the site sits 300 feet above the same lot. So, be prepared for a steep hike if you choose to visit.
After surviving the brutal trip up, it’s easy to see why this place was selected for a fortification. It has a view of the Salt River, an off shoot of the Ohio River, and while I don’t know if this is part of the reason why the site was selected, I can see it being difficult for opposing troops to try and attack it. I had a hard enough time getting to the top on the paved road. I can’t imagine trying to climb up with a rough road, if one existed at all.
While going up the mountain wasn’t easy, walking down was a breeze. I wanted to see the cemetery that sits atop another one of the mountain’s peaks, but it required going up another incline. I didn’t know if I could make it and didn’t want to have to call someone to get me. That’s an adventure for another day.
My day of adventuring ended at the movie theater, where I saw Insidious: Out of the Further. A Google search shows that is did not get the best reviews, but I liked it. I rarely find a horror movie that I don’t like.
So, that was my day of exploring. I will be next next week to post about journey to the Mothman Festival
